PART ONE — From Didim to Amsterdam: Discovering a City Through Its People

We have returned from Amsterdam.

The suitcases have been unpacked, and everything we brought back has been put in its place. But what we bring home from a journey goes far beyond what comes out of our luggage.

The water you stop to admire from a bridge, a Turkish sentence you hear in a foreign city, a bowl of hot soup, the stories shared by someone you meet along the way… And then there are the unexpected difficulties that affect both your wallet and your enjoyment of the trip.

My wife and I returned from our Amsterdam journey with all of these experiences.

For me, travelling is not simply about finding famous landmarks where you can pose for photographs. Perhaps it is my journalistic instinct, but I also pay attention to what people talk about in the streets, how they live, how shopkeepers treat their customers, and the different voices that come together in a city square.

In this respect, Amsterdam is an extraordinarily rich city.

It has its canals, museums and bicycles. But beyond these familiar attractions, it also has squares that echo the concerns of the wider world, lives shaped by migration, and cuisines representing many different cultures.

In this series, while sharing memories from our own journey and the moments we captured along the way, I will also offer our readers planning to visit the Netherlands a comprehensive travel route.

Because Amsterdam is beautiful, but the Netherlands has a much bigger story to tell than Amsterdam alone.
